Vision in Curriculum Planning

Activities are considered to be developmentally appropriate when they are planned with the children’s interests, needs and developmental capacities in mind. Topics of study, or projects, are planned to relate to and build on previously gained skills or concepts.  Activities are planned to be age-appropriate, specific, and based on ideas relevant to the children’s world.

Project Work/Large Group and Small Group Wor

Large group sessions introduce the project and stimulate the children’s interest in the topic.  Large and small group work provides an opportunity for investigation, discovery, and developing skills. Small group work is intended to be hands-on experiences that are largely teacher-planned, but child-directed and based on the topic of study.

DiscoveryExperiences/Centers

Discovery experiences allow children free choice between multiple centers – language/literacy, dramatic play, math/manipulative, science/sensory, creative arts, and music/movement. Each center allows for the integration of multiple curriculum areas to assess academic, social, and physical abilities of each child. It is a time for children to learn social skills, make choices, be responsible for the materials they play with, and develop new concepts and skills.

Teachers in the Lab

As part of our mission, we train high school students considering majors in education-related fields. Thus, the preschool serves as a training class for high school students. We are able to have four teachers in the classroom, making the teacher-child ratio about 1:3.  This allows excellent one-on-one time for each child.  This also increases our ability to identify and meet identified goals for specific children.

Daily Schedule

The daily schedule may vary depending on the topic of study, activities planned and preference of the  teacher. Depending upon the objective of the learning plan, daily schedules can be subject to change.

Assessment

Assessment is the process of observing, recording, and documenting what children do to serve as a guide  for curriculum development and communicating with parents about their child’s progress.  Assessment assists teachers in becoming aware of each child and their individual needs.  The Utah State Core Curriculum for Preschool serves as the guide to all assessment tools.

Health and Safety

Preschool Safety measures:
Parents do not bring their child if they, or a family member has had Coronavirus
symptoms in the last 24 hrs.
Parents sign a form stating this at check-in everyday.
Hand Sanitizer is used when entering and leaving the room.  Hands are washed afte
using restroom,  before eating snacks, and other times as needed.

Children are kept in smaller groups or pods for most of the preschool day.
Large group time is limited to less than 15 minutes with children sitting further away
from each other.

      Health – Immunizations

Each child admitted to the program must be in good health.  An immunization form is required for each child in the program.  Please make sure that the actual dates of the immunizations are written on the form.  We also require an emergency contact person and phone number in case we cannot reach you.

      Safety

In the interest of your child’s security, we require that a parent or responsible adult (16 years or older) come into the classroom with the child to sign them in and out.  If more than one person is authorized to pick up your child, please include their names and phone numbers on the registration form.  If there are special instructions and/or restrictions regarding individuals not allowed to pick up your child, please provide that information in writing to the teacher.  You may call SHS at 801-489-2870 to get the teacher, or email (kris.kelly@nebo.edu).

Check - In and Out Procedure

CHECK-IN TIME:  Check-in time comprises the first ten minutes of the session (starts at 8:15). This provides time to sign-in your child and pass out any information that you may need. (Please check your child in quickly so that we can allow space for all vehicles coming in to drop off their preschoolers.)

CHECK-OUT TIME:  Check-out time is at 10:30am. Children may still be involved in activities, but

Teachers expect that you will come and sign them out and take them during that time.

Please make it a point to be on time to have your child picked up by 10:30 am.  If you are running late and will not be able to pick your child up on time please call 801-489-2870 Our high school students have another class so promptness is appreciated.

Snack Time

Each day, the children are provided a light snack during the school session. If your child has any allergies that we need to be aware of, please indicate them on the emergency card.
During snack, we encourage the children to serve themselves.  Snacktime can be an excellent time to reinforce social awareness, talking with peers, and to rejuvenate physically.

Guidance

What is generally referred to as “discipline” is referred to as “guidance” in early childhood circles. The word ‘guidance’ reminds early childhood educators of the important principle that children are still learning and need to be “guided”. Many of the errors that children make at this age occur because they don’t understand the expectations or because they are still learning how to control their impulses. Thus, helping them correct their mistakes and learn what to do is just as important (if not more) than learning what not to do.

In the school, children are given positive reminders about the expectations in the classroom.  Teachers guide them from a disruptive situation into another situation where they can be successful.  Teachers also assist children in problem-solving when they are in a disagreement with a peer. All in all, the methods that are used are positive and teach appropriate behavior as well as help children to understand what is not acceptable.

Our primary tool in guidance is our curriculum. When a child is disruptive or unengaged, we look first to our curriculum to better meet their needs. As we provide relevant and appropriate choices and clear expectations, we have minimum off-task behaviors.

Due to the financial dependency of the preschool on tuition funds, please notify our preschool in writing if you plan to withdraw your child so that we may find a replacement thus eliminating your financial obligations for the full tuition amount.  If you choose to withdraw your child and a replacement is found, you will be financially obligated for the prorated balance based on the amount of time your child attended the SHS Preschool.  If we are not able to find a replacement, you will be financially responsible for the entire amount of tuition. Tuition can be paid to Springville High School’s finance office in the main building.

Miscellaneous

Clothing
The children do go outside every day, regardless of the weather (with some exceptions).  Children should dress in comfortable, casual, washable clothing that allows freedom of movement. Please send an extra change of clothing in a one-gallon-zip-lock bag labeled with the child’s name. They are stored in the child’s cubby and used in case of an emergency. During the winter months it is also okay to leave some warmer clothing items in their cubby.

Toys
Personal toys, games, puzzles, etc. should not be brought to the preschool unless prior arrangement
has been made with the head teacher.

Birthdays
Some parents like to bring birthday treats for the class when their child is having a birthday.  This is
certainly not required; however, if you do decide that you would like to do this, please contact your child’s head teacher ahead of time to make arrangements.  Often, this treat replaces the snack that would be served to the children that day. Please be aware that the health code requires all food brought into the classrooms to be prepackaged.
